Naewon Kang dissertation on Madison school issues, local media, and civic participation

This morning (Monday) you will be able to find a draft of Naewon Kang's dissertation in the front office: "Civic participation, community networks, and news media: A multi-method approach to civic participation". From the introduction: "This dissertation investigates both individual and collective participation in their political process with regard to community controversies. In order to investigate the participation at both individual and collective levels, the present study presents the results of the analysis of a pooled dataset from telephone surveys in Madison, Wisconsin, and examines a case of [...] Madison's longstanding school-pairing controversy." [1] Here are the chapters which you might choose from to review, depending on what kind of angle you want to take on our school debate project:

1. Introduction
2. Dynamics of civic participation: Literature review
3. Analytical framework: Multi-method model
4. Effects of community residence and media use on civic participation (survey data analysis)
5. Historical background: Two cycles of school pairing controversy (1992-1997 debates over Midvale/Lincoln)
6. Multiple publics and their framing of the school-pairing controversy (uses news frame classification and Galois Lattice Analysis)
7. Network structure of community actors' co-coverage patterns in the local newspapers
8. Explication of frames reproduced by the local newspapers
9. Discussions and conclusion
